OF ST. AUGUSTINE

Begins September 12 Fall Term, 6 sessions
St. Paul's/Harvard Catholic Center, Harvard Square

Brian FitzGerald, D. Phil., Lecturer on Medieval Studies and the Study of Religion, Harvard University

This course is a study of Confessions, the great spiritual autobiography of St. Augustine of Hippo. Augustine’s story of his search for God raises profound ethical and spiritual questions about good and evil, nature and grace, faith and reason. Through his persistent examination of the movements of his mind and heart, and of God’s presence in them, Augustine’s book also reflects on the interplay of love and wisdom. This course will therefore highlight the ways in which Confessions reveals the dimensions of Augustine’s literary, philosophical, psychological, and theological visions. Lunch provided.

No particular translation is required, but the following two are recommended:

  • Confessions, trans. Henry Chadwick (Oxford World’s Classics)
