This course is a two-part study of St. Augustine of Hippo. In the first part, we will read the final books of Confessions, Augustine’s great spiritual autobiography, sections in which he reflects on the culmination of his search for God and considers philosophical and theological questions about time, eternity, and Creation in the light of his new-found faith. In the second part of the course, through select sermons, we will consider St. Augustine in his role as bishop and pastor, preaching on the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love.
No particular translation of Confessions is required, but the following are two recommended possibilities:
Confessions, trans. Henry Chadwick (Oxford World’s Classics)
The Confessions, trans. John Ryan (Image Books)
Copies of the selected sermons will be provided to participants.
